Credit Card Reward Programs – Which One Is The Best

Reward programs have become the norm in the credit card industry. These are a great way to enjoy bonuses and perks while using credit cards at the same time.  With so many to choose from it can be confusing which one might be the best for you. With banks fighting over customers you have the most to gain because they want to retain you as a client. Credit card holders should choose a reward that matches their lifestyle. Its not a reward if it does nothing for you.

The main types of rewards are cash back, special events, airline miles, cheaper gas, points, and discounts to your next automotive purchase. Most companies offer the reward in the form of a percentage of your purchase. Each card is different because some will give bigger discounts on particular types of purchases. For instance, with gas prices rising some are offering 5% towards gas purchases and 1% to other purchases such as groceries. When choosing the right card you need to decide if it is worth getting that type of card with different rewards for specific types of purchases or one with a fixed program. Cards are available with programs that give you 2% back to your reward account for any kind of purchase. This promotes you using it for all occurrences because you will get the same back. Be alert of the  restrictions. Some cards have limits on how much cash back or how many airline miles you can receive. If you put all of your purchases for the year on your cards, you can hit the max pretty quickly. It does not hurt to call your card issuer and ask them to raise the limit or remove it. If you have shown a history of making payments on time some will do it. If this does not work you might need to look into getting another card.

Low rate fixed credit card rewards are only beneficial if you actually use them . A large percentage of individuals do not and the banks love this. This happens all the time with airline mile reward programs because people don’t take vacations as much anymore. A cash back card is always the safest because the rewards are sent to you either as a check or as a credit to your account.  Just remember that these incentives are great if you’re good at managing your spending. Banks instituted the rewards to push you into shopping more and as a result getting in debt more. The interest charges alone from a single month of spending can easily wipe out the benefits of any rewards you earn. Whatever reward program you decide to go with make sure you pay your bill in full every month. The rewards will mean more when you cash them in and its nice to know your getting a little extra for something you were going to buy anyways.
